15th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival: September 12–14, 2008
Telluride (Southwest Travel Region)

Music pours out of Telluride’s slender valley during its annual Blues & Brews Festival. With headliners including Etta James, Gov’t Mule and the ever entertaining G. Love and Special Sauce, this year’s lineup will bring soulful sounds and creative riffs to a postcard-perfect Colorado town. Adding to inspired guitar licks are the dozens of premium microbrews flowing from taps and filling cups. And as with most festivals in Telluride, the Blues & Brews Festival will be as environmentally conscious as possible, complete with biodegradable utensils and recycled paper products.

14th Annual Loaf 'N Jug Chile & Frijoles Festival: September 19–21, 2008
Pueblo (Southeast Travel Region)

The sizzle and pop of chili seeds roasting over open flames, their heady smell lifting from lightly brazed skins and the sweet and spicy taste of the hand-prepared green chilies await at Pueblo’s Chile & Frijoles Festival. In addition to a little spice, the festival showcases a farmer’s market, where you can procure straight-from-the-farm produce. Along with food, vendors will sell original arts and crafts during this much-anticipated event.

15th Annual Tour of the Vineyards: September 19–21, 2008
Palisade (Northwest Travel Region)

Squish grapes between your toes in the grape stomp — a festival favorite. Or pair chocolates, food and atmosphere with locally produced wines to unleash their true character. Both wine connoisseurs as well as the oenological novice will find themselves gleefully bewildered by the ample variety of Colorado’s wine industry. For added romance and intrigue, participate in a bicycle tour of the area’s vineyards, where grapes ripen under unencumbered Colorado sunlight during the fall harvest.

Go Fast Games at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park: September 25–28, 2008
Cañon City (South Central Travel Region)

At the Go Fast Games, B.A.S.E. jumping and bungee daredevils test their bravery. Measuring in at 1,053 feet, the Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the world. Because of this distinction, it’s a coveted feather in the cap of those who make a hobby of jumping from staggering heights for sport. With only a bungee or parachute to stop their earthbound freefall, entrants plunge from the bridge toward the roaring Arkansas River below. And if you lack the equipment (or desire) to sign up, you can still capture great moments by watching others attempt to fly without wings.

Whether you believe that real chili doesn’t contain a singe bean, or that the quality of chili is dependent on the amount of kick it gives your sinuses, you’ll find an entry worth tasting at the High Plains Chili Cookoff in the prairie town of Wray. Generations-old recipes will be put to the test as the local community invites all to their small-town affair, where every visitor is treated like family.

Great American Beer Festival: October 9–11, 2008
Denver (Denver Area)

This is the big daddy of national beer festivals. The three-day event will feature more than 1,500 different beers from hundreds of breweries around the nation — making it the largest annual collection of beers gathered in the United States. Live music will provide beer enthusiasts with a soundtrack to their experience as they walk from booth to booth, sampling regional favorites. However, it isn’t just about sampling, it’s also about winning. Brewers enter their favorite beers and hope for high honors from a judging panel composed of industry experts. Treat yourself to the very best in the nation by tasting the winning brews.

La Boheme at the University of Colorado: October 24–26, 2008
Boulder (Front Range Travel Region)

Sung in Italian with English subtitles, this classic opera portrays the pathos of unrequited lovers. Performed by singers with incredible skill and range, the lyrical characters grip eager audiences. While this Puccini marvel was initially greeted with reserve in 1897, the piece has arguably become a standard for every other operatic performance.
